Arris Router configuration.

I am configuring a remote user's home router that is manufactured by Arris. I have two follow up questions  for the KB article regarding port triggering:

1) The port triggering table columns are titled "source port number" and "destination port number". Does the source column refer to inbound or outbound?

2) For columns that have a single port (not a range) do you use the same port number for the beginning and end range? Example: This Arris router requires a start/end for both inbound and outbound ports. If I am enabling port 80, would I enter the range as '80 to 80' (start to end)?

Thank you. And for question #2? If the port is 80, then I'm assuming I enter both the start and end as 80?

The model # is TG1682G

Hi Ace,

Sorry for the delay. One additional question for you:

Per the KB specs for  Table 2. RingCentral Desktop Softphone Application: Many of the "source port" values are "random". Since the router requires an entry for both outbound and inbound ports, should I assume there is no way to account for the random ports using port triggering? In other words, I can only setup port triggering for the items in the table that have a source port value listed.

Hello Brandon,

You don't need to port trigger the source ports that have values as "random" since the connection is initiated using TCP, which is connection oriented unlike UDP connections.

I see. Well, my goal is to configure a remote worker's router with port triggering so we stop having issues with presence when she is logged in. But, she uses the desktop app when working remotely, and the only value with a source port that appears to be relevant to the problem is "Signaling (Depreciated)". So it's almost as if I shouldn't even bother in this case?

Hi Brandon,

For protocols that use TCP, you don't need to bother. The softphone by default uses TCP. It should work with most routers unless there is a specific rule in the firewall blocking such connections, which is unlikely.

Hello Brandon,

Source port = outbound, destination port = inbound.

By the way, what is the model number of this Arris gateway? There are specific Arris gateways that may not work well with SIP based services(like RC) because of how they are implementing SIP ALG.
