Text messages not refreshing creating "cannot set read status" issue

I'm having an issue with refreshing texts that I've already sent and received that should be viewed as already read. I get an error message saying "cannot set read status" As a result I have 54 text "new" messages that should not appear as new. I'm getting confused and frustrated as I can't tell which text is new and which is old. I've already uninstalled the app and resinstalled it and still doing the same thing. Please, fix it asap. Thanks
