Is there an easier way to assign soft phones to people other than using their computer names?

Is the only way to assign and make work a soft phone by using the computer name it's installed to? And does that mean one account can not use a softphone on multiple computers? I'm setting up several, and since people use their laptops that were sometimes setup by their children, the computer name option doesn't help me at all. Let me know if I'm worried for no reason! (hopefully)
