Why do I hear 4 beeps prior to a normal steady dial tone?

When I pick up my receiver or activate the speakerphone I hear 4 beeps prior to a steady dial tone. What does this signify?

Thanks Chuck, and that is what I assumed. But, when I check the system I can't find any voice-mails, new, saved, or otherwise for my extension, the group I belong to or any of the other conference room lines I administer.
