Fax: Repeat failed outgoing faxes. Anyone else? Cause?

For certain fax numbers, I get repeated failed transmissions.  The fax numbers are valid.  These are established entities that use dedicated fax lines.  I regularly fax myself at the same time, and those transmissions (to myself) come through just fine.  But the other numbers will continue to fail, several times over.

Usually, after upwards of six or seven attempts, I will finally get through.  Unfortunately, on at least one of these attempts, my fax was only partially transmitted (although is showed as "successful" on my end).

How common is this for others?  Is there a known problem or solution?

There is no difference between using the desktop app or my browser.
The attachments are all scanned pdf, with no unusual characters.
Every time I fax myself, it comes through fine; the other numbers continue to fail.
There are NO problems with my internet connection.
The receiving fax numbers may be busy, but they are not so busy as to block multiple attempted transmissions.

Rob,

Are you faxing to another VoIP Number or a POTS line?

I am reasonably certain that the "problem" numbers are POTS lines.  They are all part of municipal government offices (e.g., courthouses).

Hi Rob,  If you are noticing consistent or higher failure rates to certain numbers, it may be due to the line & fax machine on the recipients end.  This is why Kim asked if you if the recipient numbers were "pots" lines.

There is likely a bottle neck on the receiving end causing too much packet loss thus, causing the fax to fail. It's rather complicated to explain but here is a 3rd party page the explains how the data is converted and travels across the internet.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T.38

Since the failures are generally due to packet loss, the best resolution is to send the fax at a time when you know there is lower volume,  and send smaller documents. However a 2 page fax should have a very high success rate.

I am currently having the exact same issue.... Faxes sent to government offices or other entities with certain types of fax machines fail. The fax machines are dedicated pots lines.  Volume and time of day should not have any impact... as it's connecting to a dedicated line.  The faxes work fine if sent from a traditional fax machine available at FedEx / Kinkos....  The problem with that is I must leave the office to send a fax.  This issue appears to be with ringcentral fax handling software as it is the common denominator.  Any chance of a fix??

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Faxes to governmental agencies fail. Faxes we send to governmental agencies fail eg/. IRS, licensing, etc. Is there something that we need to do differently to make this work. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hello Johnson,   You'll first want to rule out anything on this page:  Fax Troubleshooting Checklist

But if you can confirm that they always fail to the same numbers, then it's possible they just can't receive voip faxes as Kim stated above.
