Caller ID from my cell phone

As a feature suggestion, I would like to request the ability to be able to have my outbound caller ID for both phone calls and texts to appear to be coming from some external number outside of ring sent (such as my cell phone number). Thank you.

Scott,

I'm not sure exactly what you need here but I'm just curious on your request.

One of the pluses about having a RingCentral account and separate business number is to have only one phone and yet be able to "hide" your personal cell phone number from your customers and others. If you would want to use some external number outside of RIngCentral I can see two things happening:
1. If you use your personal cell phone number for phone calls and texts you will negate the benefit of using RingCentral when you're not at your desk and on your mobile device.
2. If you use some random external number (maybe like your home land line, if you have one) or just some number, you run the risk that you will not receive return calls or texts to your device.

You can, however, purchase another line (local or digital...local would be less expensive) and log into it with a virtual extension. You would be able to use that number for your outgoing calls but if you wanted to receive incoming texts you would need a separate digital line.

I could be wrong but the above is how I interpret your request. Can you expound on how your request would/could be helpful?

Thank you for your reply. I guess my issue is I really prefer using my regular iPhone for text messaging, as compared to the ring central app - mainly because of the character limit on the ring sent texts and I like to put a signature at the end of many of my texts to let people know who I am.

How many characters are you using for your texts? Are you aware that RingCentral allows for 1,000 characters in an SMS text. Currently MMS functionality is not available (I believe I heard it might be available in Q1 of 2017...fingers crossed) but that would be a main reason.

I can see a good feature request being that of adding functionality to add a signature on SMS (and in the future...MMS) texts.

Yes...it has been that way for a while now. From the RingCentral web site regarding Business SMS:

Send unlimited texts.
  • Use your one business number for voice, fax, and text messages.
  • Send and receive text messages with up to 1,000 characters to and from RingCentral extensions or 10-digit local numbers.
  • Message colleagues, clients, and department groups. Recipients can reply via Business SMS or their native SMS.
Business SMS works on your mobile devices and desktops.
  • Text seamlessly across smartphones, tablets and desktop, Apple Watch, and RingCentral for Desktop.*
  • Remove unwanted calls with number blocking and create a spam blacklist.
  • Receive push and email notifications of incoming messages.
  • Easily make a call, join a conference, or visit a website by tapping on detected phone numbers and URLs directly from text messages.
  • Instantly join a conference call with one tap from a text message invitation; no need to enter a participant access code.

I use an Android phone so I'm not sure about some of the iPhone functionality but I find the final two bullets of the above very handy for myself personally:
  • Easily make a call, join a conference, or visit a website by tapping on detected phone numbers and URLs directly from text messages.
  • Instantly join a conference call with one tap from a text message invitation; no need to enter a participant access code.
Just some additional info for you to hopefully make some functionality a little clearer.

Jan,  thanks again for helping out!

Scott,  Everything Jan stated is correct.  Several months ago we increased the character limit.  It's true that MMS is currently not available, however it's on the road-map.  We'll have a fairly large release (hopefully next month) that will most likely include MMS (if everything goes as planned).

However other users do have other reasons for wanting to spoof the outbound caller ID and there's an existing topic here if you'd like to visit that page and click the vote button:  PLEASE allow spoofing of outbound caller ID number
