Latest iOS App kills battery

Sometime in the past several weeks or so when I updated my iPhone 7 Plus with the latest version of the RingCentral app, my battery was below 20% by the afternoon.

A bit of background, the iPhone 7 Plus has the largest battery of any of the iphones.  I used to be able to go 1.5 to 2 days on a single charge prior to this update.  I used the Settings --> Battery screen to determine that the top battery consuming app was RingCentral.

To test this, I ran for several days with the RingCentral app installed as normal and I did not use the app to make or receive any calls.  In other words, I didn't use the app at all.  My battery died quickly by afternoon.  Then I turned 'background app refresh' off for RingCentral for a few days and as before I didn't use the app at all.  With background refresh off, my battery life returned to normal.

Yesterday I was on the road and opened up the RingCentral app to make a call to the office.  I forgot to close the app.  By 1pm my battery was at 3%.

I created a support call and they simply said they would pass the suggestion onto engineering.  This doesn't inspire confidence that this will be fixed.

I cannot have an app on my phone that takes it down in less than one business day.

Brad,

Have you checked your battery usages under Settings|Battery in iOS 10/iPhone 7 Plus? I have an iPhone 7 Plus and I am on my second day. I leave my RingCentral mobile app open all the time. My battery usage on the mobile app is at 5% after yesterday. I did not use it much yesterday however it was "open" all day. I am at 72% battery as of 7:00 am (CST) this morning.

My biggest battery users, according my the battery settings, is with the Home & Lock Screen, Messages, Outlook and Weatherbug. I don't seem to experiencing the same battery issue with the latest update as you are. Could some other app really be eating up your battery instead?

Yes, I said this in my original post:
I used the Settings --> Battery screen to determine that the top battery consuming app was RingCentral.
I am seeing RingCentral use 50% or more just running in the background.

Sorry...I missed that sentence. But it's still very strange that even without you using the app, but keeping it open, and my doing the same thing resulted in your 50% usage versus my 5% usage.

I just checked my 6S and RingCentral shows 1% only for 24 hrs.  When you check under battery settings and tap RingCentral it may show more detail.  Mine indicates number of minutes it was open. I am curious what yours shows.

I didn't check that, but I will turn background app refresh on again and then check that after it runs for a day.

One thing of note is that you do not need background app refresh enabled for the RingCentral app in iOS 10 if you have the integrated calling feature enabled. This feature allows you to receive calls similar to the way the native Phone app does (more details on the Integrated Calling page). The app will still be able to run in the background because the app can use the built-in CallKit features that allow this app to run a call while you do other things on your phone. If you are on the phone a significant amount you will still see a lot of battery usage from the RingCentral app due to the energy needs of live, high-quality audio calls. Try keeping background app refresh off for RingCentral and see if you get any better battery life or difference in how the app works.
