delete a desk phone but keep number the same for softphone for user

I have a user that was assigned a deskphone but it was never given to him so he is just using the softphone. I want to remove the polycom from his user profile but keep the number what he has been using the same if possible. How do I do this in the correct steps?

Rhonda,
I do this often with my users. If you go into Phone System >> Phones & Devices
Select the phone you want to change
Then click Change Phone
Select RingCentral Phone app and follow the screens.

I'm not sure if this is the best way of doing it but it works for me.

Locate the Deskphone by number in Phones and devices.
Change phone to RingCentral for Desktop

I will try this, but before I do, have you done this if they already have an existing desktop app and are signed into it?

Same here - but it never hurts to have a RC tech on the line.  Do you have support? I dial 611 for assist if I am in something I am not sure of.

Rhonda - I believe that worst case the user may have to sign out and sign back into the desktop app after you make the change, otherwise it should work just as Eric and Gordon stated.

This is hat I was afraid of. Now he has two phones listed under Phones in Phones & Numbers.
RingCentral Phone app and SoftPHone. The Softphone does not have a number by it but is assigned to his computer. The app does but is not assigned to any computer. So this did not really do what I wanted it to do and I have do play around and fix it anyway.

I have seen that before - I believe if you have the user log out and log back on the system will reconcile the two into just one. Give it a try and let us know the outcome!

The second phone as you can see has no number.  This is the free softphone that came with the extension.  It may not have moved the device into unassigned phones, you could check Phone System>Phones & Devices>Unassigned for the serial number.  Maybe the user logging out and back in will clear this.  Oh... deauth the computer because it is signed in it has a bit of a hold on the app, even though it no longer has a digital line on it.
