Desktop App: Coordinate with my desk phone

I am using my phone in a reception type setup and sometimes I use a headset others I am using my cisco phone. I would like the ability to dial out from either device. I am a single user in this case but I also have a client that is an insurance business with the same issue they have an agent that acts as the receptionist and would like the convenience of being able to switch from phone to on screen when they are calling doing telemarketing. Is there a way to do this without having to pay for a second user. in both cases the RC softphone is singing in to the same extension as the phone?

Yes, it will. The mobile app (iOS/Android) now includes Presence, too.

Me too. I would really like to switch my office over to Ringcentral but I have heard many grumblings about the shortcomings of the softphone, which is heavily used with our current system. Hopefully they get this update pushed out soon...

OK, I found the RingOut setting in the new softphone to accomplish at least some of this.  It seems to not know anything about my desk phone (wondering if that's because I'm not at work near that phone) but do I have to type in my desk phone's number every time I want to do the RingOut pretty much defeats any time savings one would have with this feature.  Please tell me I'm missing something?

To use my Polycom as my ringout phone I had to add an entry for a work# and set it to the #of my Polycom. I left it off so it is not in my list of phones to be rung because the Polycom is already  listed. Log off and back on the softphone and the work# should now be in the ringout list and you can then save it as the ringout. This is how I dial from my softphone most of the time.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Steven.  I wonder why RC doesn't include the desk phone (which it already knows about and is in the user's settings) as an option?

Honestly - we are not using the softphone at all in our office.  I just does not integrate or function  the way we would expect it to. Now that we have our own dial out tool developed - I may try to reinstall the softphone but only to check voicemail etc - not dial the desk phone.

I hope that RC will look at the performance of the current SoftPhone and improve how it works plus add in some of the features that have been mentioned here.

I don't understand how this request is any different from RingOut -- select any number on your computer, press the RingOut hotkey, your desk phone (or cell phone or any other phone you set) rings, you pick it up, and then it rings the number you selected on the computer. Isn't that perfect integration between phone and computer?

WebColin,

RingOut doesn't meet our needs.  Consider a situation like ours where we have tech's primarily in the field but may work out of the office some days.  When they are in the field, the softphone needs to be their primary phone.  When they come into the office, we would want their desk phone to be their primary phone.  Currently you would have to have two separate extensions and direct dials to facilitate this.  RingOut is dependent on the employee using some other device, such as their personal cell phone which is not professional and could run into coverage issues in some locations.

We're looking forward to the day when the softphone is simply another way to access a single RingCentral account rather than require a separate subscription.  Cost is part of it, but simplicity and ease of use is just as important.

Unless I'm missing something about your need (entirely possible), that's exactly what RingOut does -- you'd just change between Direct Dial (local softphone) or RingOut to the physical phone to use in the RingOut settings. It just takes 3 mouse clicks with no scrolling or searching to change (just tried and counted), and that includes the click to close the Settings window.

In the new RingCentral for Windows, this is under Settings -> Calling (the default tab, so need to click) -> Direct Dial or RingOut -> close window.

This is all on a single RingCentral line, with no extra expense for using the direct dial softphone. As far as I know (maybe it's different for some of account types), every physical VoIP phone includes a free softphone line.

My understanding - and may be this has changed - was that the direct dial functionality did not work unless you purchased a second subscription for the softphone.  So you would have one subscription for your desk phone and one for your sofphone and they would be different extensions and direct dials.

Do you know if this is now no longer the case?

Sorry this thread has not been updated in a while. This feature was implemented some time ago. The SoftPhone (now called RingCentral Desktop), can be associated with the same number as the deskphone. This means you do not have to use the RingOut feature if you are dialing from RC Desktop.  There have been many other features added as well including the new HUD feature, presence, and several more.

Hi Steven, I'm not quite sure I understand your question. The RingOut functions hasn't been replaced.  Can you further explain the scenario above or what you are trying to do?

Hi Mike,

Steven is referring to the scenario that this entire thread is discussing.  The ability to make calls using your desk phone, with the desktop app as the interface.

For example, we would like to click call on the app, and have our desk phone be the device that is placing the call, instead of the softphone.

Yes, that  can be done with the RingOut feature. From the RC Desktop app. Click Settings (the small gear wheel), go to Calling, click the RingOut button, and from the drop-down select the DL#.

I can't figure out how to turn off the "Ring out" feature if I want to make the call directly from my computer. How can I do this?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled It would be fantastic if you could integrate the Desktop App with our Desktop Pho.... It would be fantastic if you could integrate the Desktop App with our Desktop Phone so that the Desktop App could control the Desktop phone, or at least provide limited features!

More than anything, we'd like the ability to search through contacts on the RingCentral Desktop App, and then call them from the Desktop App but be able to take the call on the Desktop Phone.  Nextiva had a feature on their application where it was simply, "call from phone" and you would click on it, and then the call would ring on your actual phone and you could take it there...

The desktop app has a lot of great, easy to use features that is much easier to use than on the actual phone.

So for 4 years Ring Central has not found a solution to being able to dial from your soft phone but have your actual phone in your ear.  Or receive a call and answer from your physical phone.  Or make a call from your physical phone using the soft keys

Are you kidding me?  Every other VoIP has this as a standard.

Adnd by not having this feature, the soft phone is truly just eye candy, it serves no purpose if it can't simultaneously communicate to the physical phone.  Had I known this was the case, I never would have agreed to purchase RingCentral for my company.  In fact, if this solution is not repaired within the next 3-6 months, I will do everything in my power to shame this service.

Our company is a technology vendor, so our referrals on phone services are taken seriously.

Sorry to be angry, but I am so disappointed in this lack of functionality.  I was naive to think it was standard with Voip.  I mean logically, the internet goes to phone, then daisy chains to computer.  What am I missing?

We were naive in expecting the same feature, having come from Nextiva which is a lower level service, and even it had the feature.  We're pretty disappointed in the service as well, as this feature is critical for our team of 15 as well.  Any idea how do we get RingCentral to see this thread?

IMO, I think RingCentral views RingOut and/or Call Flip as the solution.  Seems like if the technology is there in the desktop app to flip the call to the desk phone that it could be programmed to give you an option while the phone is ringing to answer via the desk phone.  At this point the desktop app has been reduced to a fax sender/viewer, a voicemail listening device, and an on-screen caller ID.

I'm hoping and assuming they are seeing this thread.  Over the weekend, I will be looking into any loopholes and seeking advice if this is grounds to terminate the service without any fees.

I feel truly hosed.

I'm hoping that a rep is reading and will respond to our thread with some hopeful intel into development that is about to drop.
